It's a Hardknock life.

While I try to stick to human powered vehicles, sometime time and distance do not allow a bicycle as one's mode of transport. As of today, Main Street Bikes is Shelbyville's official Hardknock dealer. Hardknocks are bobber style mini bikes that are streetable, fast, and get 75mpg! The DIY crowd can get one of these unassembled for 1500 dollars, or for a limited time, you can get yours assembled starting at 1800. If you are on a budget, we have interest free financing available through GE moneysport. You can get a fully assembled Hardknock for just 150 a month. That is less than five dollars a day. The Full Lynskey

Western Kentucky University was kind enough to grant me an undergraduate degree in Graphic Design about 10 years ago. That worked out so well that I returned in 2005 to get a Masters of Arts in Folk studies. During my 6 years of study in seemingly unrelated topics, there was much discussion about the nature, and definition, of art. Several thousand dollars of student loans later, I am still lacking in a decent, working definition.

As arbitrary as art may be, I believe I have truly experienced it twice in my life. Once when I purchased an F-Style Mandolin from Jimmy Robertson in Metcalf County. Jimmy has made a number of mandolins, and when asked how he started he would always reply, "I went out to the woods, chopped down a tree, and carved away everything that didn't look like a mandolin." Jimmy's humility is apparent when you see one of his instruments in person.

My second first-hand experience with art came this Tuesday, as I assembled a painted Lynskey R420 road bike, with full Dura Ace and Fulcrum 3's. Words cannot do this bike justice. I have seen and ridden a lot of high end carbon, and while they are wonderful bikes, carbon frames always have a certain manufactured quality that leaves their appearance somewhat lacking. On the other hand, Lynskey's meticulous welds and perfect finish shine, and speak of a maker obsessed with perfection. This bike is truly a work of art.

While I hate to think of parting with such a beauty, it is for sale. The price on this complete bike in M/L size is little more than the regular cost of a painted frame and fork.

The Lynskey has landed

Main Street Bikes is officially a Lynskey dealer now and Thursday marked the first arrival. Now in stock is a M/L R220 road frame and fork in a gorgeous brushed titanium finish. These retail for 2650. If you are in the market, we would be happy to talk kits and build this baby up with Shimano, SRAM, Campy or whatever your heart so desires. Pictures to come. | End of text. 2008-03-14 21:10:39

Who needs gears

Tired of messing with derailleurs? Miss the simplicity of that first bike you had as a kid? Try a fixed gear or a single speed. Going to one gear not only helps keep down the maintenance headaches, it is also a great way to keep your legs honest. Fixed gears are known for being off season trainers for lots of roadies. The constant spinning really irons out weak spots on your cadence and forces you to put more power into the hills. Come check out the Jamis Sputnik at Main Street Bikes. The sputnik is a light weight city fixed gear ready for commuting or training. Its steel frame and easton carbon fork make a buttery smooth ride. For the off roaders we have an Exile SS from Jamis. The SS is equipped with Hayes Disc brakes and a Manitou Relic fork for the rough stuff. This Exile was lightly demoed, so you can pick it up at a bargain price. | End of text. 2008-02-01 13:11:37

Club news update

For those of you who marked this Sunday down for the initial Shelbyville cycling group meeting, then you, like me, were completely unaware of this sporting event which will be held in a closed arena somewhere in the US and feature two football clubs of different cities. Apparently, many people set this date aside to drink heavily and watch the event on something called a "big screen". while, I don't understand this Super Bowl thing, I have decided to move the meeting to February 9th so that those of you who plan to watch can get your nacho on. Anyway, the meeting to discuss Shelbyville's riding club, events, schedules, and advocacy will be at the coffee shop on February 9th at 5:30 PM. | End of text. 2008-01-28 20:38:26

Racing club and riding club news.

Sunday Jan. 27 will be the first meeting for those interested in riding with Main Street Velo. We have limited slots and many interested parties, but you are more than welcome to try out for the team. The following Sunday, Feb. 3rd will be an introductory meeting and discussion session to start Shelby counties first official riding club. anyone who likes to ride and wants to ride with others is welcome. We will discuss ride planning, organization, events, dues, by laws and all that good stuff at this meeting in hopes of having a successful first year. Meetings will begin at 5:30 at Main Street bikes. Refreshments will be provided. Call tom at Main Street bikes for more info. | End of text. 2008-01-16 18:09:24

Looking for riders and racers

One of the main goals of Main Street Bikes is to bring the cycling community of Shelby county together on a regular basis. We are looking for riders who would be interested in group rides, which will begin early spring. We are also looking for anybody interested in racing on a developmental team next year. For racers, we are looking for a commitment to train with the team when you can, and participate in at least three races. These races may be time trials, road races, crits, or even some tri and duathlons. We are talking to sponsors and hoping to get some expenses taken care of. Please contact tom at Main street Bikes if you are interested in riding with a group or racing. | End of text. 2007-12-05 16:51:30
